The Bouvet Island DXpedition

Bouvetøya or Bouvet is a Norwegian volcanic island in the Southern Ocean. It is one of the most isolated islands in the world and 89 percent of the island is covered by glaciers. The island has status as a nature reserve and setting up a camp requires a permission. Its location is at 54°25′S, 3°20′A, 2500 kilometres southwest of South Africa, 1600 kilometres from Gough Island and 1700 kilometres north of the coast of Dronning Maud Land. The island is not part of Antarctica, which is defined as the area south of 60 °S. The island measures only 49 square kilometres, and is almost entirely covered by ice. Steep cliffs on all sides of the island make it extremely difficult to go ashore there. Olavtoppen, 780 metres above sea level, is the highest peak on the island. more...

3Y0I On Their Way To Bouvet!

It hasn’t been easy getting to here, and it isn’t going to get any easier getting to there. There’s been some heated moments, personal tragedy, confusion, many disappointments, relief, hardship and oh, a few strained conversations. And we’re sure there’s more of the same ahead too. In the meantime the Rebels are gonna’ do what Rebels do – fight through the naysayers, fight through the lack of funds, fight through personal tragedy, and fight through everything – for our Brothers. Awesomeness is being greeted by a 37-foot ketch in Cape Town Harbor and its crew of ZS ham friends.
We are grateful for their assistance in getting us into the dock and processed by the SA customs and immigration folks.

1530 UTC: We are now docked, and we have been processed by customs and immigration.

News from 3y0z

February 3, 2018, 2000 UTC: During the last 72 hours, we continued to experience the high winds, low clouds, fog and rough seas that have prevented helicopter operations since our arrival at Bouvet. No improvement was predicted in the weather forecast for the next four days. Then, last night, an issue developed in one of the ship’s engines.

This morning, the captain of the vessel declared it unsafe to continue with our project and aborted the DXpedition. We are now on our long voyage back to Punta Arenas. As you might imagine, the team is deeply disappointed, but safe. There is already talk about rescheduling the DXpedition,

3Y0Z – Bouvet 2018 - dx expedition

NEWS UPDATE — Heavy sea ice east and north of King George Island has made navigation between King George Island and Bouvet slow and of increased risk. We will therefore depart from Punta Arenas and sail directly to Bouvet. This has necessitated changes to preparations. That process is underway and moving as fast as possible.

Our sailing time to Bouvet is now estimated at 14 days. We estimate that our sailing date and QRV date will move back 24 to 36 hours. Our QRT date will be extended as necessary to provide everyone with the best possible chance of working Bouvet.
